It will always be easier for your middle schooler to answer general, safe questions – about the world, about school, about other people – rather than inquiries specific to them. That will determine the kinds of questions you can ask them, as well as your success rate. Your job is to tread carefully and pick up on clues from your middle schooler about how they’re feeling.
